you ain’t from around here, are ya?

I keep hearing/reading stories about how someone visits/moves to the South, orders a Coke, and gets asked “what kind…Coke/Sprite/Dr. Pepper/etc, etc; and are dumbfounded. Now, I know that “Coke” is pretty much the general term for soft drinks around here, but I have never, in my almost 29 years in South, had this happen to me, or witness it.

I’m starting to think you’re all fibbers.

  1. I think that’s an urban legend (rural tale?).

Sure we might call it all Coke in conversation, but when you order, you have to be specific.

  2. Yeah that’s what I’m thinking; though if I have to hear it one more time I may scream. ha ha! It’s been cropping up a lot lately around me for some reason.

  3. Yeah, same here… 20 + years of living in the south and never heard that question. I have gotten into the habit, though (because of the places that will substitute Pepsi without telling you if you ask for Coke), of asking “Are you Coke or Pepsi?” at places where I’m not sure.
